Storing a piece you're not wearing

Keep each piece separate — its own pouch, or its own compartment. Metal rubbing against metal is the one thing that genuinely scratches a finish, and it has nothing to do with water, sweat or humidity.

Fasten chains before you put them away. A tangled chain gets pulled straight, and pulling straight is how clasps fail.

Travelling with it

The easiest way to travel with a Macaje piece is on your body. It goes through airport security, the hotel shower and the sea without ceremony, and it can't get lost in a bag it was never in.

For anything you do pack: separate compartments, chains fastened, and keep it in your carry-on.

What to keep it away from

Perfume, hairspray, makeup, nail polish remover, body oil, suntan lotion and deodorant. Apply all of these before the jewelry goes on, not after. This is the one real limit on the finish and I'd rather name it than pretend it doesn't exist.

Long, direct sunlight over months can fade some finishes. A drawer is fine; a sunny windowsill for a season isn't.

What you don't need to worry about

Water, steam, chlorine, salt, sweat and humidity. The stainless-steel core doesn't corrode, so damp storage isn't the threat it is with brass-based jewelry. You don't need silica packets, and you don't need an airtight box.
